Biography

Taylor Carson hails from the land of the Dave Matthews Band, Virginia Coalition and O.A.R. While he built his musical chops on the shoulders of the acoustic rock superstars, his lyrical inspiration comes from the timeless wordsmiths like Paul Simon, Cat Stevens and Martin Sexton. His new record "Defending The Name," is a 16-song folk-pop epic that is introducing Taylor to a national audience.

Taylor writes the following in the artwork for his new record, Defending The Name:

"These 16 songs are my story. This is the celebration of the triumphs that led to my confidence and the illumination of the tragedies that created my demons. My triumphs and tragedies brought me to music, music taught me to love and love is the resolution of Defending The Name."

What They're Saying

I've known Taylor for 10 years -- his vocal performance on "Defending The Name" sounds as though he's been lifting weights with his voice.
- Brad Corrigan (of Dispatch)
Carson's sound is kind of folksy pop. It's not country, or Dave Matthews, but there are definitely elements of both in his music. 'Defending The Name' is a very honest album.
- Zoiks Online
His newest, recently released album, 'Defending The Name,' is his masterwork in storytelling…Carson is all about meaningful content as opposed to typical, formulaic styles, and pulls it off with a gentlemanly style. During Live Music Week, we were fortunate to sit down with him after his live session on WERS (performing his new material including "Moonshiner," "Five," and "Die Happy") to discuss his work, his tour, and his love for Paul Simon.

Everybody will talk about happy family memories — graduations, weddings, birthdays and holidays. Death, divorce, infidelity and the like rarely make good dinner-party conversation. Singer-songwriter Taylor Carson chooses to put everything, good and bad, out for the world to examine. He delved into his sometimes dark family history for fodder for his most recent album, 'Defending the Name.'

I loaded Taylor's record into my "new music" playlist on my iPod and set out to do an afternoon of yard work. there were four standout songs that afternoon. when I realized that all four came from Defending The Name, I knew it was a record that deserved some attention.
- Erik Steinert, Creative Director, HAUS
Taylor knows how to push the buttons that make people feel and it's so good to feel, that we should all send Mr. Carson a thank you.

Taylor Carson has officially put his stamp on the kind of artist he wants to be...Defending The Name is the kind of record that really draws you in, keeps you listening and wanting more from this artist...it’s truly a complete album in that it tells a story, many stories actually and showcases Taylor’s uniquely authentic vocals and his focus on crafting the best melody for the best lyric. The instrumentation on this album never gets pigeonholed into a certain genre, something that I as a musician have always admired in recordings, it sets a mood and takes you places. One word that I rarely use and only with artists that truly connect with their audiences either live or coming out of speakers, is, make it believable and the only way to do that is be true to the song and to what picture you want to paint. Taylor has done just that. It’s got a vibe and most of all, it stands out from the crowd. Just as Taylor always has.

"Defending The Name" is by all means a modern-day masterpiece and Taylor Carson shows he's ready to take the step into the spotlight that he now more than deserves.

Taylor Carson stands at the lip of the low, barren stage in the basement of Ebeneezer's Coffeehouse in Washington, D.C. Wearing a gray suit vest, a white button-down shirt with its sleeves rolled up, jeans and cowboy boots, the singer-songwriter looks like a man who just finished a hard day's work. With his acoustic guitar slung over his back, he smiles as he greets fans, shaking hands while receiving warm congratulations.

"Freight Train" picked as Top 10 song of 2010
- Twangville
While acoustic rock is not usually on my radar, I've enjoyed TC's latest album "Defending The Name" quite a bit. I had the chance to see TC last year in Cambridge and can honestly say he is even better live.
- Tumblelog: Featured Artist for Music Mondays
An accomplished singer and guitar player, Arlington’s Taylor Carson reaches new heights with his songwriting on the 16-track 'Defending the Name,' a concept album based on his family’s history. After falling out with a family member 'I was trying to understand why the people in my family are the way they are and why I am the way I am,' Carson told On Tap while explaining the genesis of the record. 'I started doing some research as far back as my great grandfather, who was a moonshiner.' That discovery — and a few more shocking ones to follow — paved the way for an insightful, enjoyable and ultimately upbeat musical exploration of the complexities of family dynamics.
- James Currie, OnTap Magazine
With his latest release, Taylor Carson succeeds where many before him have fallen short. "Defending The Name" is a true concept album that effortlessly marries Past and Present, Truth and Fiction, Personal and Universal, all into one cohesive voice.
- Jarrett Nicolay of Virginia Coalition
Defending the Name will crack open your heart, will be on repeat in your car, and will make you want to open the liner notes and learn all the words. Taylor's record has become habit, that does all the things a good habit should do - teaches me a lesson and is something i can't stop. He did an amazing job at marrying everything music should be. It's catchy, it's deep, it's poignant, it will move you heart and your hips."
